Meet the farmer.

Coffee trees in Northern Tanzania are deeply rooted in the volcanic soil, digging for minerals and water below the dry terrain. Only the strongest survive in the Ngorongoro Highlands, a land populated by all sorts of beasts: elephants, wild boars, dik-dik antelopes, buffalos, and baboons, to name a few. Because of this (not always peaceful) coexistence, the coffees from North Tanzania have earned an unusual reputation: they are the “wildest” on earth.

This is where our lot comes from: the Arusha region, which lies on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania.

Arusha is home to Glanmalure Estate, a specialty coffee farm owned by Vera Stucker. The farm, part of her larger state, Ngila coffee, lays at altitudes ranging from 1,600 to 1,700 masl. Traditional coffee varieties such as Kent, Bourbon, and SL28 are all grown under the shade of trees next to the farm's protected rainforest. Thanks to the high altitudes, the rich volcanic soils in the area, and Vera´s incredible dedication and careful handcraft, coffees from Glanmalure are a delight to taste.

The process.

This lot comes from the highest part of the farm at 1800m above sea level. The trees are older than usual, averaging 90 years of age. Grading of the beans by washing after soaking them overnight in the fermentation tanks. This is followed by manual selection before the best coffee beans are taken to the drying beds. Washed coffee beans are naturally sundried by turning the parchment until they have reached a relative humidity of 12%.
